Appeal launched over controversial 125ft gas drilling rig near Scarborough
Europa Oil & Gas has appealed North Yorkshire Council’s refusal of its plan for a 125ft gas drilling rig in Burniston, near Scarborough. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the appeal, which could allow a temporary exploration wellsite to proceed.
Councillors rejected the proposal in April, citing potential harm to the heritage coast and landscape, nearby homes, tourism and the council’s climate objectives. Europa says the project could create jobs and that the rig would have little effect on residents; its proposed well stimulation method has been compared with small-scale fracking. Any future gas production would need separate consent, and it is unclear whether the Government’s planned fracking ban would cover this method.
In short
- Europa has appealed the council’s refusal of a 125ft drilling rig.
- The Planning Inspectorate will decide whether the temporary wellsite can proceed.
- Any future gas production would require separate consent.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Supporters argue that a temporary exploration site could create local jobs and help develop a domestic gas resource, while Europa says the rig would have little effect on residents. They may see exploration as a proportionate step to assess the resource, with any later production subject to separate consent.
The case against
Opponents argue that a 125ft rig and associated drilling could harm the heritage coast’s landscape, disturb nearby residents and undermine tourism. They also cite the council’s climate objectives and uncertainty over whether the proposed stimulation method would fall within the planned fracking ban as reasons for caution.
