51 Years Ago Today, We Lost the Woman Who Helped Make Hank Williams a Legend Before Becoming a Nashville Powerhouse in Her Own Right
Audrey Williams died of heart failure at her Nashville home on 4 November 1975, aged 52. Remembered as Hank Williams’ first wife and the mother of Hank Williams Jr., she also helped advance Hank’s early career and later became an influential publisher and promoter in country music.
Born Audrey Sheppard, she met Hank in Alabama in 1943 and married him in December 1944, soon taking on a management role and recording duets with him. They had a son in 1949, divorced in 1952, and she continued working in music through the 1950s and 1960s, running a record label and publishing and film companies, among other ventures. She left the industry after her singing group broke up in 1970; the article says her final years were affected by substance use, mental health and financial problems, including unpaid taxes.
