‘Magic: The Gathering’s First Movie Officially Gets Its Biggest Update Yet

Maya Hawke has been cast in the lead role of the first big-screen adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, marking the project’s clearest progress after more than a decade in development. The casting matters because the film has moved through several studio partnerships without reaching production, and Hawke is the first actor announced.

Matt Johnson will direct and co-write the film with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. It is described as an ensemble story, with Hawke’s character expected to be central; Hasbro, which owns Wizards of the Coast, is developing it with Legendary Entertainment. No release date has been announced.
