No end in sight for Russell as he eyes famous All Blacks win
Finn Russell says he feels physically and mentally refreshed as he prepares to lead Scotland against New Zealand, brushing off repeated questions about retirement. The match matters because Scotland have never beaten the All Blacks, and Russell sees a national team title or landmark victory as unfinished business in his career.
At 34, Russell will win his 96th Scotland cap at Murrayfield and make his 100th international appearance for Scotland and the British and Irish Lions. He has faced New Zealand three times without a win, and says Scotland need to convert more of their chances inside the opposition 22: against South Africa, they had plenty of entries but scored at about half the rate they managed against Argentina.
In short
- Russell says he feels refreshed at 34.
- Scotland have never beaten New Zealand.
- He says better finishing is key to Scotland’s progress.
