Trains disrupted between Manchester airport and city centre after ’emergency incident’
Rail services between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly were suspended in both directions on the evening of 4 November after an emergency incident on the tracks. TransPennine Express said emergency services were responding, with disruption expected until 12.45am on Thursday.
The incident was thought to be near Mauldeth Road station, but its circumstances were unclear. Passengers could use Metrolink between the airport and Piccadilly without extra charge, as well as a free Bee Network service every ten minutes between Piccadilly and Victoria; ticket acceptance was also extended to specified TransPennine Express, Northern and Avanti West Coast journeys.
In short
- Rail services between Manchester Airport and Piccadilly were suspended.
- Disruption was expected to last until 12.45am.
- Alternative tram and bus services were available without extra charge.
Explained simply
Manchester Airport is connected to the city centre by rail, with trains running to Manchester Piccadilly, one of the city’s main stations. The route also serves local stations, including Mauldeth Road, in south Manchester.
TransPennine Express and Northern operate services in the area, while Avanti West Coast trains also serve Piccadilly. Manchester Metrolink trams and Bee Network buses provide alternative ways to travel around the city, so disruption to trains can affect airport journeys as well as local trips.
