Accused Oakland perv arrested for secretly filming women as cops expose his sick recording device
A 35-year-old Oakland man was arrested after Berkeley police said he allegedly used cameras hidden in his shoes to record women and minors without their knowledge. The case matters because investigators believe he may have targeted additional people around UC Berkeley over several weeks and are seeking to identify them.
The investigation began on 26 October after a teenage girl reported seeing a camera pointed towards her at Lox Stock and Bagel. Police said they used vehicle registration data to help identify a suspect, then detained Noah Stein on 30 October after a witness reported a camera on his shoe; officers found a discarded mini camera nearby. Investigators also found a camera allegedly concealed at a Taco Bell Cantina, seized electronic devices from Stein’s home and urged anyone who visited the restaurant after 11 pm on 29 October, or believes they were recorded, to contact police. Stein faces several charges, including invasion of privacy and alleged offences involving a minor.
In short
- Oakland man arrested over alleged hidden-camera recordings.
- Police say the investigation spans two Berkeley eateries.
- Detectives are trying to identify possible additional victims.
Explained simply
Hidden cameras are small recording devices concealed in ordinary objects, which can make them difficult to spot. Recording someone in a private or sensitive situation without their knowledge can breach privacy laws, with additional protections applying when the person is under 18.
Berkeley police investigate incidents in the city, including around the University of California, Berkeley. In this case, officers are examining whether recordings were made at more than one location and are trying to identify anyone who may have been filmed. Any charges remain allegations unless proved in court.
