‘Sea of Glass’ Brings ‘Country Gothic Noir’ Tradition to Greece With Story of Two Women Finding Solidarity Across Generations
Alexis Alexiou’s third feature, *Sea of Glass*, brings a “country gothic noir” to the Thessaloniki Film Festival, following its premiere out of competition in Edinburgh. Set in an off-season resort town on the Greek island of Evia, the film follows two women from different generations who find solidarity as they confront abusive family relationships and seek freedom.
Evangelia Andreadaki plays Vangelio, 65, who goes on holiday after her bedridden husband dies; newcomer Christiana Matelska Toka plays Vicky, a young woman running her family’s resort business while caring for her alcoholic father. When Vangelio intervenes during an episode of her father’s violence, the women’s relationship leads towards a confrontation and escape. Alexiou and co-writer Afroditi Nikolaidou drew inspiration from films including *The Postman Always Rings Twice*, *Cape Fear* and *Thelma & Louise*; the film is due for a limited theatrical release in Greece on 12 November.
In short
- Two women in an Evia resort town find solidarity across generations.
- The noir drama centres on abusive family relationships and liberation.
- *Sea of Glass* opens in Greek cinemas on 12 November.
Explained simply
The film is set on Evia, a Greek island where many resorts are quieter outside the main holiday season. Its two central characters are Vangelio, an older woman newly widowed, and Vicky, a young woman managing her family’s resort while caring for her father.
Both women are living with abusive family relationships, though their circumstances and ages differ. Their connection begins when Vangelio steps in during an episode of violence, and the story follows how they support one another as they seek a way out.
