NSW restricts nitrous oxide sales to curb recreational misuse
New restrictions on nitrous oxide sales have taken effect across New South Wales, aiming to curb recreational misuse among young people. The rules limit who can buy the gas, when it can be sold and how much retailers may supply, while preserving exemptions for legitimate uses such as food preparation and medical treatment.
Retailers cannot sell to under-18s, make sales between 10pm and 5am, offer same-day delivery or display products where customers can easily access them. Consumer canisters larger than 10g are prohibited, and purchases are capped at 250g per customer per day. Advocate Sam Bramman welcomed the changes after his use of up to 50 capsules a day led to drug-induced psychosis and two months in a psychiatric ward.
