Prime Video Is Officially Reinventing the Most Iconic Wizard in Fantasy History
*The Rings of Power* is reshaping Gandalf as he moves from the confused Stranger into a more recognisable wizard. Actor Daniel Weyman says the character is beginning to understand his calling: helping goodness flourish in Middle-earth. The shift matters because Gandalf’s defining strength is presented as inspiring others, rather than defeating enemies through force.
After spending time with Tom Bombadil, Gandalf is described as less intent on controlling events and more focused on recognising other people’s potential. A five-year jump follows season 2, and changes to his appearance, staff and posture signal greater confidence. Co-creator Patrick McKay says season 3 shows Gandalf at a different stage of his long life; in Tolkien’s mythology, the Istari were sent to guide and encourage Middle-earth’s people against Sauron.
In short
- Gandalf is beginning to understand his purpose.
- His power is framed as guidance and encouragement.
- Season 3 follows a five-year time jump.
