Explained simply
The Songwriters Hall of Fame recognises people whose songs have had a lasting impact on popular music. Its nominees include performers who write their own material, as well as writers and teams whose songs are recorded by other artists.
This year’s list spans different generations and styles, from Lady Gaga, Jack White and Boy George to Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Sia and Vince Gill. Songwriters become eligible 20 years after their first commercial song release, and eligible Hall of Fame members vote on who will be inducted.
The nominations matter because they draw attention to the writers behind well-known songs, including work that listeners may know through another performer. They also show how songwriting in popular music ranges from individual artists to collaborative teams such as Stargate and Stock Aitken Waterman.
