North Carolina Republican Virginia Foxx trails challenger by 99 votes
Republican Virginia Foxx is trailing Democrat Chuck Hubbard by 99 votes in North Carolina’s fifth congressional district, with more than 95 per cent of ballots counted. The close result could end Foxx’s 21-year career in Congress, though she has not conceded and says the race is not yet decided.
Hubbard has 139,034 votes, or 48.7 per cent, to Foxx’s 138,935, or 48.66 per cent, according to NBC. Foxx noted that an earlier election result in her career was reversed after officials found 100 votes had been misallocated. Her tenure has included public controversies, including shouting “shut up” at journalists in 2023 and a letter criticising a 10-year-old who wrote to her about electric vehicle tax credits.
In short
- Chuck Hubbard leads Virginia Foxx by 99 votes.
- More than 95 per cent of ballots have been counted.
- Foxx has not conceded the race.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Hubbard’s narrow lead, with most ballots counted, gives his supporters reason to see a possible change in representation as a legitimate expression of voters’ choice. They may also argue that a 21-year incumbent should be judged on her public record, including conduct that critics found dismissive of journalists and a child who contacted her.
The case against
Foxx’s supporters can reasonably argue that a margin of 99 votes is too close to treat as settled while ballots remain to be counted and official procedures for resolving close results have not concluded. Her recollection of a past result changing after misallocated votes were corrected underscores why the final outcome should follow verification rather than early projections.
