Grimes joins AI-generated anthology testing cinema audiences’ appetite for the format
Grimes will appear in the AI-generated sci-fi anthology *Gods Don’t Give Gifts*, lending the film both her likeness and voice. The project is billed as the first AI film to reach cinemas, making it a test of whether AI-made films can attract audiences and succeed commercially.
Directed by Jack London, who is known online as Gossip Goblin, the film is set for release on 4 December. Its four linked stories explore a future where bodies are disposable and consciousness is commoditised, themes that echo Grimes’ past interest in transhumanism and AI. Producer Fable says using performers’ likenesses alongside their vocal performances could become more common in AI animation, while earlier AI film experiments have yet to show that the technology is essential to storytelling.
In short
- Grimes lends her likeness and voice to an AI sci-fi film.
- *Gods Don’t Give Gifts* is due in cinemas on 4 December.
- The film tests AI’s commercial prospects and storytelling potential.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
AI-generated cinema could give filmmakers new ways to realise ambitious science-fiction worlds, lower some production barriers and offer audiences a distinctive form of animation. With performers such as Grimes lending both likeness and voice, the project may also show how artists can participate in and shape this emerging medium.
The case against
The film’s commercial test may say little about whether AI improves cinema: earlier experiments have not shown that the technology is essential to the storytelling. Using performers’ likenesses and voices also raises questions about consent, creative control and how such contributions are valued as AI-made productions become more common.
