Nvidia ensure unboxing a ludicrously expensive new graphics card isn’t limited to real life in these RAM crisis times by releasing a GeForce 8800 GTX unpacking sim
Nvidia has released a free Steam demo that recreates unboxing and installing its GeForce 8800 GTX in a bedroom set in 2006. The nostalgic project arrives amid current memory shortages and high graphics-card prices, making its focus on an expensive GPU a pointed reminder of the cost of PC gaming.
Developed by Dylan Browne, the demo includes a period-style PC gaming room, a copy of Crysis and modern Nvidia rendering features. The 8800 GTX cost $599 at launch in 2006, roughly $1,000 in today’s money; to run the demo, players need at least an RTX 4070, itself a high-end card.
