NRCC chair Richard Hudson loses NC House seat — flipping district blue for first time in 60 years
Richard Ojeda, a Democrat and retired Army major, defeated Republican Richard Hudson in North Carolina’s 9th District, flipping the seat for the first time since 1963. Hudson chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee, which works to keep Republicans in control of the House, making his loss a setback for the party’s campaign leadership.
The Associated Press called the race on Thursday, with all precincts counted and Ojeda ahead by about 6,000 votes; Hudson had conceded the day before. Hudson had represented the district since 2012 and won it by more than 18 points in 2024, when Donald Trump carried it by about 16 points. He is the second party campaign chief in as many midterms to lose his own race.
In short
- Democrat Richard Ojeda flipped North Carolina’s 9th District.
- Republican Richard Hudson lost by about 6,000 votes.
- No Democrat had held the seat since 1963.
