A disco band stole a song from Madonna in 1983 and never charted. She responded with a 10,000,000-selling single
Madonna replaced “Ain’t No Big Deal” on her 1983 debut album after disco act Barracuda secured and released the song first. Producer John “Jellybean” Benitez offered her “Holiday” as a substitute, and its success helped establish Madonna as a major pop star.
Benitez said the album was finished when he joined to work on remixes, but losing the track left it with too few songs for an LP. Madonna was reportedly unhappy about returning to the studio, but liked Benitez’s demo of “Holiday”; the single reached number two in the UK, topped the Billboard Dance chart and has sold 10 million copies, while Barracuda’s version did not chart.
In short
- Barracuda released “Ain’t No Big Deal” before Madonna could.
- “Holiday” filled the gap on Madonna’s debut album.
- The replacement single has sold 10 million copies.
