In 2014, Phoebe Bridgers got her first taste of internet fame. Nobody knew who she was
In 2014, 19-year-old Phoebe Bridgers unexpectedly became a viral internet image after posting a photo of a festival-goer wearing a T-shirt with a sexually suggestive slogan. The post reached Reddit’s front page, bringing her a brief burst of attention before most people knew her name; in retrospect, it offered an early glimpse of the dry humour that would later accompany her songwriting career.
That moment came as Bridgers was building a following in Los Angeles, after writing songs from childhood and making her live debut at 15. Early tracks including ‘Georgia’, ‘Chelsea’ and ‘Killer’ helped establish her sound, while an Apple iPhone 5S advert featuring her performance of a Pixies song introduced her voice to a much wider audience. The article also notes that she later joked about online claims that she was an “industry plant”.
In short
- Bridgers’ festival photo briefly went viral on Reddit in 2014.
