Citibank office shooter targeted company over $2,500 debt: says Florida sheriff
A 35-year-old man targeted Citibank’s Tampa campus after becoming angry over a $2,500 credit-card debt, according to the county sheriff. He killed employee Leanne Selman before an armed security team member stopped him, highlighting how a threatened dispute escalated into an attack on people with no connection to it.
Jacob Pearson had called a Citibank-affiliated lawyer about three hours earlier and threatened to come to the campus with a rifle unless a court hearing was cancelled. He drove about 90 miles from Orlando, crashed through a fence and fired first with a rifle, which jammed, then with a handgun. He had 90 rounds but fired 15; no other people were shot, though four were treated for minor injuries or medical concerns. The sheriff said Pearson had no criminal history, and his father said he had not seen signs that his son could carry out such violence.
