Socceroos urge FA to move Jordan friendly in Middle East due to safety concerns
Socceroos players have urged Football Australia to move or reschedule their friendly against Jordan in Amman, citing safety concerns amid instability in the region. The request comes after the Asian Cup was postponed, meaning the matches are no longer serving as planned preparation for that tournament.
Australia are due to play Qatar in Doha next Saturday AEDT, then Jordan four days later. The players’ union, Professional Footballers Australia, says players have overwhelmingly backed moving the Jordan match, after consulting independent security experts; Indonesia has already cancelled its planned Amman friendly. Winger Awer Mabil said he would travel if selected, trusting the security measures, and also praised coach Tony Popovic, whose contract expires early next year.
In short
- Socceroos players want the Jordan friendly moved or rescheduled over safety concerns.
- Australia are due to play Jordan in Amman four days after facing Qatar.
- The Asian Cup postponement has changed the purpose of the friendlies.
