Even occasional marijuana use linked to higher stroke risk, study finds
A study of nearly 450,000 US adults found that cannabis users had higher reported odds of cardiovascular disease and stroke than non-users. The findings raise questions about cannabis and heart health, but the research shows an association and cannot establish that cannabis causes these conditions.
People using cannabis one to five days a month had 23% higher odds of reporting cardiovascular disease, while those using it 16 to 30 days a month had 21% higher odds. Reported stroke odds were 40% higher among low-frequency users and 25% higher among heavy users; no statistically significant link with heart attacks was found, and smoking, vaping or eating cannabis did not change the results. Researchers analysed 2020–2024 survey data, which relied on participants’ recollections, and the findings are due to be presented at an American Heart Association conference.
In short
- Cannabis use was associated with higher reported odds of stroke.
- The study cannot show that cannabis causes heart disease.
- Researchers analysed survey responses from nearly 450,000 adults.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The reported association, including higher stroke odds among occasional users, is a reason to take possible cardiovascular risks seriously. Until better evidence is available, people may reasonably favour caution, particularly because the study found no use frequency or method that clearly removed the association.
The case against
The study cannot show that cannabis causes stroke or cardiovascular disease: it relied on self-reported survey data and may not fully account for other differences between users and non-users. The pattern also does not establish a clear dose-response relationship, and the findings have not yet been presented at the conference, so treating them as proof of harm would go beyond the evidence.
