RFU boss confirms WRU Anglo-Welsh league approach
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has formally asked to join a proposed Anglo-Welsh league, Rugby Football Union chief executive Bill Sweeney has confirmed. The approach comes as English rugby plans to expand its top league, while Welsh rugby is reconsidering the number and future home of its professional teams.
The English league is aiming to grow from 10 to 12 clubs for the 2029-30 season. Wales currently has four professional sides in the United Rugby Championship, but the WRU plans to reduce that number to three by 2028 and has committed to supplying four URC teams for another two years. Sweeney said the RFU needs clarity on how Wales could leave the URC, and that no formal talks have yet taken place.
