Splice Reimagines the DAW With ‘Create’ — Its Agentic AI-Powered Platform for Newcomers
Splice has launched Create, its first digital audio workstation, using AI to help new music producers learn production tools and complete songs. The company says the platform is designed to guide and collaborate with users rather than generate a song for them, entering a market where established software competes with simpler browser-based tools and AI music services.
Create includes a chatbot that offers production advice and responds to voice or text instructions, alongside tools for combining samples from Splice’s library of more than three million human-made, licensed sounds. Splice says AI can adapt samples by changing qualities such as timbre, key and tempo while keeping the source material human-created. The move follows the acquisition of Kits AI and reflects the company’s view that AI is reshaping creative workflows.
In short
- Splice has launched its first digital audio workstation, Create.
- Its AI assistant offers guidance and responds to voice or text prompts.
- Splice says its samples remain human-created and licensed.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Create could lower the learning barrier for aspiring producers by offering practical guidance inside a DAW, while helping users adapt licensed, human-made samples into their own arrangements. If it supports rather than replaces musicians’ choices, the approach may make production more accessible while preserving a meaningful role for human creativity.
The case against
Even when positioned as guidance, an AI assistant that advises on production and alters samples could steer beginners towards formulaic choices or make it harder to develop skills independently. Its reliance on a large licensed sample library and a commercial platform also raises questions about creators’ control, whose work benefits, and whether AI assistance improves the craft or mainly locks users into one company’s ecosystem.
