A Jesuit Priest Explains How He Facilitated Bob Dylan’s Meeting With the Pope
A Jesuit priest has shared how he helped arrange a meeting between Bob Dylan and Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. Antonio Spadaro said the interest appeared to be mutual and described the way the two men looked at each other as “beautiful, intense”; he did not disclose what they discussed privately.
Spadaro, the Holy See’s Undersecretary for Culture and Education, had also brokered a meeting between the pope and Patti Smith. He said Dylan’s 1967 song “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” came to mind because Leo is known as the first Augustinian pope. The connection reflects the song’s dream of the saint, but whether it came up in their conversation remains unknown.
In short
- Spadaro helped arrange Dylan’s Vatican meeting with Pope Leo XIV.
- He said their interest in meeting seemed mutual.
- A Dylan song about St Augustine inspired a connection, but their discussion is private.
