‘Pearly penile papules’: Who’s more likely to get the ‘finger-like growths’ — and whether you need to worry
Pearly penile papules are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the head of the penis. They are not sexually transmitted infections and have no link to poor hygiene, but concern about their appearance can cause anxiety and lead some men to avoid intimacy.
An estimated 14% to 48% of men develop them, and they are more common among Black men and people with foreskin; they are often noticed in young adulthood. The bumps usually need no treatment, though a healthcare provider can remove them with freezing, laser treatment or surgery. Anyone with a new penile change, especially alongside pain, discharge, itching or bleeding, should seek medical advice.
In short
- The bumps are common, benign and not contagious.
- They are more common among Black men and those with foreskin.
- A clinician can remove them if their appearance causes concern.
