Latino voters propel Democrats to big wins with leftward swing
Latino voters swung towards Democrats in the midterm elections, helping the party win key races across the country and retake control of Congress. The shift marks a sharp reversal from 2024, when Latino support for Donald Trump and Republicans was stronger, and signals that concerns about prices and government corruption resonated with voters.
In Texas, every county moved in a more Democratic direction compared with 2024, with larger shifts generally in counties with more Hispanic residents. About one-third of Hispanic voters backed Republicans in local House races, down from roughly four in ten who supported Trump in 2024; around seven in ten supported Democrat James Talarico in Texas’s Senate race. Democrats also won every House district along the US-Mexico border for the first time since 2008, and 14 Hispanic Democrats were newly elected.
In short
- Latino voters shifted towards Democrats in key midterm races.
- Democrats won every US-Mexico border House district.
- 14 Hispanic Democrats were newly elected.
