‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spinoff Pushed To 2027-28, Moves Production To New Mexico After Failing To Get CA Tax Credit As Betsy Beers Calls For Program Change
ABC’s untitled *Grey’s Anatomy* spinoff will film in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after twice being denied a California tax credit. The move marks the first time in the franchise’s 23-year history that a series will leave California, and the show’s planned midseason 2027 debut has been delayed to the 2027–28 season.
The drama, created by Shonda Rhimes and showrunner Meg Marinis, is set at a rural medical centre in West Texas. Executive producer Betsy Beers told a California Assembly hearing that the rejected application cited insufficient job creation, and said the wait for a possible second application cost the production time, money and staff. She urged the state to review its award criteria and increase the programme’s annual $750 million funding pool.
In short
- The spinoff will film in Albuquerque after two rejected California applications.
- Its premiere has been pushed to the 2027–28 season.
- Betsy Beers wants California to review its tax credit rules.
