Britain launches second military satellite for Earth surveillance
Britain has launched Titania, its second military satellite, to improve the country’s ability to monitor activity on Earth from space. The satellite is part of a programme to give the UK more independent intelligence and surveillance capabilities, which officials say could support national security and military operations.
Built in Hampshire by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and BAE Systems under a £9.5 million contract, Titania weighs about 100kg and orbits more than 300 miles above Earth every 90 minutes. It launched on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission on 1 October and is now undergoing several months of testing; the Ministry of Defence has not disclosed its technical specifications. Titania follows Tyche, launched in August 2024, and is expected to operate for at least five years, with Juno and Oberon planned to join the UK’s satellite programme.
In short
- Titania is Britain’s second military satellite.
- It will monitor Earth from orbit.
- Two further satellites are planned.
