In the 1990s, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant resurrected the old Led Zeppelin magic. Who played drums?
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant reunited in 1994 for a collaboration that revived Led Zeppelin songs in new arrangements, drawing on Moroccan musicians and an Egyptian orchestra. The drummer was Michael Lee, whose playing helped give the project its energy while the reunion remained distinct from a full Led Zeppelin comeback.
The collaboration began with an invitation to appear on MTV’s Unplugged series and continued through the No Quarter project and a world tour. Lee, who had played with The Cult and Echo & the Bunnymen, also performed on Plant’s 1993 album and contributed drums and songwriting to Page and Plant’s 1998 album, Walking into Clarksdale. He died in 2008; Page attended his funeral in Darlington.
