BYU has thrived in an NIL era that many expected them to falter in, NFL legend Steve Young says
BYU has succeeded in college football’s name, image and likeness (NIL) era despite early doubts from alumnus Steve Young about how the university would adapt. The Cougars’ results suggest the new system has opened recruiting opportunities while the school continues to emphasise its religious and university culture.
Since 2021, BYU is tied with Boise State for the ninth-most wins in college football. It is ranked seventh in the AP poll after reaching No. 2 following a win over Notre Dame, and could rise again by beating No. 3 Utah. University vice-president Keith Vorkink says BYU aims to comply with NIL rules without making money the main reason athletes attend; Young credits coach Kalani Sitake with building a shared identity in a more financially driven environment.
In short
- BYU has prospered since NIL began in 2021.
- The Cougars are tied for ninth in wins since then.
- Steve Young credits Kalani Sitake with building a strong culture.
