Michigan Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed’s Wikipedia page was whitewashed of controversies by mystery editor before election: sources
Researchers say an unidentified Wikipedia editor revised Michigan senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed’s page in the months before the election, removing or softening references to controversies. The changes matter because Wikipedia is open to public editing and is used by search engines and AI systems as a source of information.
The editor, using the name “CopyleftEverything”, also made dozens of changes to pages about left-wing political groups, according to the researchers. Among the edits, wording about El-Sayed not obtaining a medical licence was softened; descriptions of influencer Hasan Piker and tensions with Michigan’s Jewish community were also removed or altered. El-Sayed, who holds a medical degree but did not complete residency or obtain a licence, defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Tuesday’s election.
In short
- Researchers traced disputed edits to El-Sayed’s Wikipedia page.
- Changes softened or removed references to campaign controversies.
- The editor also revised pages about several left-wing groups.
