Voting While Disabled Needs to Get Easier
Millions of disabled Americans encountered physical and administrative barriers to voting in the 2026 midterms, from inaccessible polling places to difficulties registering and receiving voting materials. Advocates say restrictions on mail voting and other state rules can leave people unable to exercise their rights, despite legal protections and improvements in accessibility.
About 40 million disabled Americans are eligible to vote. A 2024 report found that 14 per cent of disabled voters had problems voting in the 2022 midterms, compared with 4 per cent of non-disabled voters; common difficulties included queuing, reading or marking ballots, and entering polling places. Access has improved through ramps, accessible machines and staff training, but enforcement often depends on individual complaints, while long travel distances and complex ballot language remain obstacles.
In short
- Disabled voters still face barriers across the voting process.
- 14 per cent reported problems in the 2022 midterms.
- Accessibility has improved, but enforcement and ballot complexity remain concerns.
