Frustration over delay in reopening park cafe
Sandall Park Cafe in Doncaster has been closed since April, and plans to redevelop it have stalled despite first being proposed in 2015. Councillor Guy Aston has criticised the delay and the council’s lack of updates, saying a new cafe would make the park more welcoming and useful for families.
A £5m restaurant and cafe-bar complex was considered in an earlier proposal. The council said in August that a deal to demolish and rebuild the venue was close to completion, but now says a long-term development lease is at an advanced stage, with final details still being agreed. The Friends of Sandall Park said the cafe would serve thousands of visitors and hoped an agreement would be reached soon.
In short
- Sandall Park Cafe has been closed since April.
- Redevelopment plans have been discussed since 2015.
- The council says lease details are still being agreed.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The prolonged closure has left park visitors without a useful place to eat or meet, and a renewed cafe could make Sandall Park more welcoming for families and other visitors. Given that redevelopment has been discussed since 2015 and the council previously said a deal was close, residents are entitled to clearer updates and a timely decision.
The case against
A long-term lease and redevelopment may involve substantial investment and complex terms, so agreeing the right arrangement could take time. The council may reasonably want to settle the details carefully to secure a viable project that serves the park over the long term, rather than rush into a deal that proves unsuitable.
