Explained simply
The Championship is the second tier of English men’s football, below the Premier League. Clubs play a season of league matches, with points earned for wins and draws shaping the table; promotion to the Premier League is at stake for the leading teams.
Stoke City, Portsmouth, Norwich City, Bristol City and Wrexham are among the clubs competing in the division. Wolverhampton Wanderers, usually called Wolves, are also in this season’s Championship, where a team’s place in the table can change as other clubs play their matches.
The results matter because clubs are competing for promotion, while teams lower down the table face the risk of relegation to League One. A position at the top can therefore be significant, though it depends on how many matches each club has played and the results still to come.
