De Zerbi declines to blame VAR as Tottenham lose to Leeds
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi declined to blame VAR after his side lost 1-0 to Leeds United in the Premier League. He said Tottenham had not played to their capabilities and should focus on improving their performance.
Leeds’ Jayden Bogle was not booked after a VAR review of his challenge on Mathys Tel, who later left the match with an ankle injury. De Zerbi said Tottenham lacked spirit, character and intensity in the second half; Leeds manager Daniel Farke called the injury an unlucky outcome and said Bogle had no bad intention. The win was Leeds’ first league victory since September.
In short
- Leeds beat Tottenham 1-0.
- De Zerbi focused on Spurs’ performance, not VAR.
- Tel left injured after Bogle’s challenge.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Tottenham can reasonably argue that the challenge on Mathys Tel warranted a booking: he was injured and left the match, and a VAR review raised the question of whether the tackle crossed the threshold for a foul deserving further sanction. Consistent enforcement matters for player safety, even when there was no intent to cause harm.
The case against
Leeds can reasonably argue that the decision should rest on the nature of the challenge, not the unfortunate injury that followed. Farke said Bogle had no bad intention, and VAR evidently did not find grounds to overturn the on-field decision; treating every serious injury as proof of a bookable offence could unfairly penalise players for accidental outcomes.
