Spring snow hits south-east Australia as Antarctic air chills major cities
An unseasonal cold blast brought snow to parts of south-east Australia, including Thredbo, Perisher and Mount Hotham, as well as Kunanyi/Mount Wellington in Tasmania. The falls drew attention because they arrived in spring, though snow in some of these areas in November is not unprecedented; several also had snow in November 2022.
Cold air moving north from Antarctica and south-westerly winds made temperatures feel markedly lower than forecast across Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra and Sydney. Warmer weather is expected by Tuesday, but forecasters warn a strong El Niño could make the coming southern hemisphere summer hotter and drier, increasing wildfire and drought risks in Australia and southern Africa.
In short
- Snow fell at several Australian alpine sites in November.
- Cold winds made south-eastern cities feel below 13C.
- A strong El Niño could bring a hotter, drier summer.
