Scillonian III completes final Isles of Scilly to Penzance crossing
The Scillonian III made its final crossing from St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly to Penzance, ending nearly 50 years of service between the islands and Cornwall. Its departure drew emotional farewells from passengers and islanders, reflecting the ship’s importance to local life and the start and end of each tourist season.
Launched in 1977, the vessel made more than 10,000 trips carrying islanders, visitors and birdwatchers, and became known for its rough rides in Atlantic swells. Its replacement, Scillonian IV, is travelling from south-east Asia and is expected to begin service in March, with greater capacity, higher speed and systems designed to reduce rolling and pitching.
In short
- Scillonian III completed its final 37-nautical-mile crossing.
- The ship served the islands for nearly 50 years.
- Scillonian IV is due to start sailing in March.
