Fitness influencer barely survives terrifying brain infection on tropical vacation — as expert reveals warning signs
Australian fitness coach and influencer Khiana Smith, 23, was hospitalised in Bali after developing meningitis, following a severe headache and sensitivity to light. Her worsening symptoms, including difficulty walking and slurred speech, led to emergency treatment and highlight why possible neurological warning signs need prompt medical attention.
Smith said doctors initially treated her for bacterial meningitis as a precaution while determining the cause. She improved enough to leave intensive care but later returned with continuing head pain, light sensitivity and slurred speech; she also reported memory loss and brain swelling that prevented her from flying home. An emergency physician said viral meningitis can resolve on its own, while bacterial meningitis may progress quickly and needs antibiotics. He advised travellers to consider relevant vaccinations and medical evacuation insurance.
