South Africa elections: ANC marks its worst-ever performance
South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) recorded its worst-ever result in municipal elections, winning less than 31% of the vote. The outcome reflects growing voter frustration with local services and weakens the party’s influence, while coalition negotiations are expected in several major cities.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) came second with just under 25%, and the ANC lost its majority in six of the country’s eight metropolitan regions. Voters are concerned about water and electricity shortages, unemployment, crime and corruption. The ANC’s share has fallen from 46% in the 2021 municipal elections and just over 40% in the 2024 national election; the result may offer a sign of voter sentiment ahead of the 2029 general election.
In short
- ANC wins less than 31% in its worst municipal election result.
- The party loses its majority in six of eight metro regions.
- Coalition talks loom amid frustration over services and governance.
