Crystal Palace close to sacking Sage, with Frank leading successor search
Crystal Palace are expected to sack manager Pierre Sage after a 3-1 defeat by Liverpool left the club bottom of the Premier League. Four consecutive league defeats and continuing defensive problems have increased pressure on Sage, who has been in charge for only 16 matches.
Thomas Frank, dismissed by Tottenham in February, is the leading candidate to replace him, while Sean Dyche and Vítor Pereira are also being considered. Palace have won two of their ten league games and conceded 24 goals, the division’s worst record; Sage has said the squad needs January reinforcements after the departures of central defenders Marc Guéhi and Maxence Lacroix.
In short
- Palace are expected to dismiss Pierre Sage after four straight league defeats.
- Thomas Frank is the main candidate to replace him.
- Palace have conceded 24 goals in ten league games.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Palace could argue that four straight defeats, a place at the bottom of the table and the league’s worst defensive record show that change is needed before the season slips further away. With two wins in ten and key centre-backs having departed, appointing a new manager such as Thomas Frank could offer a fresh approach and help restore confidence.
The case against
Palace could argue that sacking Sage after only 16 matches would be premature, particularly when the defence has been weakened by the departures of two central defenders and he has called for January reinforcements. Giving him time and support could provide stability and a fair chance to address problems that may reflect the squad as well as his management.
