The success capitalises on a growing trend where studios revive established but dormant intellectual property through prequel television series. Recent examples including Alien: Earth and IT: Welcome to Derry both became major cultural moments in 2025. Elle's rapid popularity is particularly noteworthy given that the Legally Blonde franchise had not released theatrical films for more than a decade, making Prime Video's decision to expand the property through streaming television appear to have paid off almost immediately.
