PlayStation Discontinues Physical Game Production Amid Industry Criticism
Sony announced this week that it will cease manufacturing physical PlayStation games, marking another milestone in the industry's shift toward digital distribution. The decision reflects the company's broader strategic move away from optical disc media for gaming.
The announcement has drawn significant criticism from prominent industry figures. Larian Studios, developer of Baldur's Gate 3, is among the major voices publicly opposing the move, with the studio's publishing director and other industry leaders characterising the decision as problematic. Concerns centre on the implications of digital-only distribution for consumer choice, game preservation, and long-term access to titles.

PlayStation is Sony's line of video game consoles, and for years games for these machines have been sold in two ways: as physical discs you buy in a shop or online, and as digital downloads bought directly through the console. Over the past decade or so, digital downloads have become increasingly popular, partly because they are convenient and partly because more of Sony's newer console models have been sold without a disc drive at all.
Physical discs matter to some players for reasons beyond nostalgia. They can often be resold, lent to friends, or bought second-hand more cheaply, and they do not depend on an internet connection or a company's servers to keep working. Digital games, by contrast, are usually tied to an online account and can become harder to access if a store or service is later shut down, which is why preservation of older games is a recurring concern in the industry.
Larian Studios is the Belgian developer behind Baldur's Gate 3, a widely praised role-playing game released in 2023 that won multiple industry awards. As a well-known and respected studio, its public stance on issues affecting how games are made, sold and kept accessible tends to carry weight with both players and other developers, which is part of why its reaction has become a notable part of this story.
