Halo 4 nearly had a real-money auction house, Don Mattrick reportedly urged

Eurogamer · 2 months ago

A former Bungie designer, Dan Callan, has shared an anecdote claiming that former Xbox boss Don Mattrick once suggested Halo 4 should include a real-money auction house for its campaign, similar to the one that damaged Diablo 3's reputation. Callan, who was recently laid off from Bungie, posted the story on Bluesky, describing how he was demoing a mission he had worked on when Mattrick proposed adding paid "campaign mech skins". The story has surfaced amid renewed scrutiny of Xbox's corporate decisions as the company undergoes major layoffs.

According to Callan, everyone in the room reacted as though the idea was groundbreaking while privately recognising it as deeply misguided, particularly given Diablo 3's well-documented troubles and the fact that Halo 4 was already around 90 percent complete. The feature never made it into the final game, and Mattrick — best known for the Xbox One's "TV TV TV" reveal — left Microsoft in 2013, the year after Halo 4 launched. The anecdote emerges as Xbox cuts 3,200 jobs and drops five studios, with Double Fine and Compulsion Games going independent, Undead Labs and Ninja Theory moving to new owners, and Bethesda studios such as ZeniMax Online and id Software facing deep cuts.
