Universal has hired television writer Liz Meriwether, known for New Girl and Dying for Sex, to pen its planned biopic based on Britney Spears's memoir The Woman in Me. The project reunites much of the creative team behind the Wicked films, with Jon M. Chu attached to direct and Marc Platt producing, signalling a high-profile push to bring the pop star's life story to the screen. Universal declined to comment on the news.
The film will draw on Spears's 2023 bestselling memoir, in which she recounts her rise from teen stardom through romances including with Justin Timberlake, and her public breakdown and subsequent conservatorship, which she fought for years to end. Published by Gallery Books on 24 October 2023, the memoir has sold millions of copies worldwide, and its Michelle Williams-narrated audiobook became the fastest-selling in Simon & Schuster's history. The move follows Hollywood's growing appetite for music biopics after the success of Michael, with Universal also currently producing a Snoop Dogg biopic starring Jonathan Daviss.

Britney Spears is the American pop singer who rose to fame in the late 1990s with hits including "…Baby One More Time". In 2023 she published a memoir, The Woman in Me, in which she described her early career, her relationships, and years spent under a court-ordered conservatorship that controlled much of her personal and financial life before it was ended in 2021. The book became a huge bestseller.
Universal, the film studio, is now turning that memoir into a biopic. Liz Meriwether, a television writer known for the sitcom New Girl, has been brought on to write the script, joining director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, the pair behind the recent Wicked films.
The project fits a wider trend of Hollywood studios making films about musicians' lives, following the success of the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, and comes as Universal separately develops a biopic about the rapper Snoop Dogg.
