Controversial Anne Frank Musical Releases Crowdfunded Cast Album

Rolling Stone · 3 hours ago

"Slam Frank," a deliberately provocative Off-Broadway musical that reimagines Anne Frank as a pansexual Latina hiding from the Nazis alongside a diversely reinvented family, has released a crowdfunded original cast album. The recording, available to download from the show's website for $20 from today, arrives ahead of the musical's transfer to a larger New York venue, underlining how a low-budget satire has parlayed online controversy into commercial momentum.

The show, with music and lyrics by Andrew Fox and a book by co-creator Joel Sinensky — both of whom are Jewish — is pitched as a satire of identity-politics excesses and features songs such as "Yeast of Edith" and "Herstory." Fox's incendiary social-media posts helped fuel a Change.org petition branding the work disrespectful to Jewish history, yet that same attention sold out its developmental run and pushed its Instagram following towards 100,000. A GoFundMe campaign for the 14-track album met its $30,000 target within 24 hours and ultimately raised $60,000 from 827 backers. The musical reopens at the East Village's Orpheum Theatre, with previews from 17 September and opening night on 4 October 2026.
