A 23-year-old Minneapolis man, Yaseen Samir Abumayyaleh, has died after a firework exploded in his hand during Independence Day celebrations on the roof of an abandoned ammunition factory in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. The incident, which happened at around 1.30am on Sunday, highlights the dangers of handling fireworks and of gathering at derelict, unsecured industrial sites.

Emergency services were alerted by a 911 call reporting that a man had been injured when a mortar tube containing a two-inch firework blew up in front of a group of 15 to 20 people. Abumayyaleh, who suffered injuries to his face and chest and was unconscious but breathing, was on the roof of the former Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant. First responders found the building's stairs unusable and initially requested a rescue helicopter, before deciding to remove him using a boom lift mounted on a fire engine. Abumayyaleh was a member of the Young Muslims of Minnesota and had taught children about Islam.
