A 37-year-old British father from Essex has pleaded guilty in Cyprus to causing the death of his two-year-old son through a rash, dangerous or reckless act. The child fell approximately 33ft from a fourth-floor hotel window at the King Evelthon Hotel near Paphos on 12 July and died shortly afterwards; the father could face up to four years in prison.

The father said he placed the boy on a windowsill while waiting for a lift, not realising the window was open. He spent eight days in custody, later paid €30,000 bail and was temporarily allowed to leave Cyprus to bury his son; toxicology tests found alcohol equivalent to one or two drinks. The hotel has faced scrutiny because the toddler was the third British tourist to die there in four years, although Cypriot authorities focused their investigation on the father and the window complied with local safety rules.
