Elton John has announced two surprise concerts in Mexico City that will finally bring his mammoth "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour to a close, three years after it was thought to have ended. The tour was originally due to conclude in 2021 but was extended into 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic and a hip injury forced the postponement of remaining dates, including several shows in Mexico. The new gigs allow the singer to make good on Latin American dates the pandemic had denied him.

The two shows will take place at Mexico City's Estadio Banorte on 2 and 3 October, marking his first performances in the country since 2012 at the Auditorio Nacional. A presale runs on 15 July at midday local time, with general sale following on 16 July. Now aged 80, John has since retired from large-scale touring after more than 300 shows, but continues to make occasional appearances and has completed a new album, written melody-first after an eye infection in 2024 left him with limited vision in one eye.

Elton John's "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour was billed as his last, running for several years before it appeared to wrap up. Plans were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and a hip injury, which forced him to postpone a number of dates, including shows planned for Mexico, leaving that leg of the tour unfinished.

Two newly announced concerts in Mexico City will complete those outstanding commitments, giving the singer his first performances in the country in over a decade. The shows matter to fans because they close a long-running chapter of live performances by one of pop music's most enduring stars, who has largely stepped back from large-scale touring since.

While no longer undertaking major tours, John, now 80, has continued to make occasional public and creative appearances, including work on new music, keeping him in the public eye even after his formal retirement from touring.
