Arthouse streaming and distribution company Mubi has acquired worldwide rights to *Making Marie Antoinette*, a behind-the-scenes documentary about the production of Sofia Coppola's 2006 costume drama. The film was directed by Coppola's late mother, Eleanor Coppola, who died in 2024, and was assembled from more than 80 hours of footage she shot on the set of her daughter's third feature. The acquisition reunites Mubi with Sofia Coppola, having previously handled the international release of her last feature, the Elvis-era biopic *Priscilla*.

*Marie Antoinette* starred Kirsten Dunst as the doomed Queen of France, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Rose Byrne and Jamie Dornan in his film debut, and won an Oscar for Milena Canonero's costume design. Sofia Coppola said she and her mother began going through the footage during lockdown, fulfilling Eleanor's wish to turn it into a feature-length documentary. The documentary was edited by Aaron Matthews and produced by a team including Sofia Coppola, Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani, with financing from Mediawan-owned Our Films and Entourage Pictures. Mubi founder Efe Cakarel praised Coppola as one of the defining filmmakers of her generation, and the company will announce release plans in the near future.
