‘New Girl’ Creator Liz Meriwether Tapped to Write Britney Spears Biopic

Billboard · 3 hours ago

Universal has reportedly hired Liz Meriwether, creator of the sitcom New Girl, to write a musical biopic based on Britney Spears's best-selling 2023 memoir The Woman In Me, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The move signals that a long-anticipated screen adaptation of the pop star's life is taking shape, reuniting Universal with the creative team behind its two hit Wicked films.

Jon M. Chu is reportedly attached to direct and Marc Platt to produce, though no official announcement has been made and Universal did not respond to Billboard's request for comment. Meriwether's credits include the rom-com No Strings Attached, the sitcoms Single Parents and Bless This Mess, and the dramas The Dropout and Dying For Sex. Spears's memoir, whose audiobook was read by Michelle Williams and became Simon & Schuster's fastest-selling ever, covers her rise to fame, her romance with Justin Timberlake and the 13-year conservatorship she fought to end. The report comes as studios chase music stories following the record-breaking success of the Michael Jackson biopic Michael.
