An 11-year-old Melbourne cat named Minam survived four hours inside a running tumble dryer, prompting a vet to warn pet owners about the dangers of animals seeking out warm hiding spots. The cat's owner, Syma, believes Minam crawled into the machine looking for warmth and was concealed beneath a doona before she unknowingly switched it on and left the house. The incident serves as a reminder to check appliances before use, particularly during colder months when pets seek warmth.

Syma returned about four hours later, could not find the cat, and eventually heard weak meows coming from the still-warm dryer. Minam was drooling and panting, and was rushed to Lort Smith Animal Hospital, where vets found full-body bruising, a swollen tongue, dehydration, and damage to his mouth and eyes; the doona is thought to have shielded him from worse harm. He spent two days in an oxygen tank in intensive care but has since fully recovered, though Syma described herself as traumatised and racked with guilt. The hospital's head vet, Kassandra Makeham, said it is common for pets to end up in dangerous situations while seeking warmth and urged owners to stay vigilant.
