Devendra Banhart has formed a new trio called Hug alongside guitarist Gyan Riley and producer and multi-instrumentalist Noah Georgeson. The group will release their self-titled debut album on 11 September through David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, led by the single "Cow With Half Moon Parasol". The project brings together three long-connected musicians and marks a fresh collaborative venture for the folk-experimental artist.

The three members have deep prior ties: Banhart and Georgeson previously worked together, including on the 2021 ambient album Refuge, while Georgeson and Riley — the son of minimalist composer Terry Riley — were childhood friends bonded by a shared love of classical guitar. Banhart recalled feeling "like a little kid" when Georgeson introduced him to Riley in Brooklyn, prompting the decision to play together. The 11-track album is accompanied by a North American tour running from 8 October in New York to 20 November in San Francisco.

Devendra Banhart is a well-known American singer-songwriter associated with folk and experimental music. He has now teamed up with two other musicians, guitarist Gyan Riley and producer Noah Georgeson, to form a new group called Hug. Georgeson has worked with Banhart before, notably on a 2021 ambient record, while Riley, whose father is composer Terry Riley, grew up as Georgeson's friend through a shared interest in classical guitar.

Hug brings these three separate but overlapping relationships together into a single project for the first time. Their debut album is being released through Luaka Bop, the record label founded by musician David Byrne, best known as the former frontman of Talking Heads.
